That's a nice route, I've ridden up part of it from the south and back.

that looks like a nice trip.  I'll have to try and make it there some weekend.  About 7 hours from where I'll be tho.

Where are the available gas stations on this route?  My bike gets roughly 210kms on a topped up tank, and I'd love to do this run but need to plan stops for gas.

Thanks.

There is a gas station on Hwy 40 approximately 50 kms south of Hwy 1. Close to Peter Lougheed Provincial park.

And this route looks great! Can't wait to try it out!

Is this route entirely paved?  Thanks.

RedDog, with your Buell...how far do you go on one tank?  I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha MT-01, but it only has a 15L tank and a 1670cc V-Twin...I think the range is somewhere around 220kms before the light comes on, and somewhere around 250kms to dry (maybe 300kms if you ride nice...so 250kms for me  :))...I know the V-Strom DL1K has a bigger tank and is more efficient, but there is just something about the MT-01 that I just love...I know your Buell has only 16.5ish liter tank, but I think it is pretty good on fuel...

As for the 300kms loop you are looking at, I don't think any of the people on this link are still active...except Ryan...my computer at work isn't showing me the route or a link (probably blocked by the powers above...), so I'm no help.

Later.

This is a fantastic route - my favorite Alberta ride by far!

My only improvement to the route shown above would be to turn west off of Hwy 22 onto Hwy 549 (around Millarville).  Take 549 west to 762 and then head north on 762 to reconnect with Hwy 22 just outside of Bragg Creek.  These short sections of highway are paved, have more twisties, less traffic, and better scenery - there are some beautiful homes on 762.

The route is paved all the way.  With the exception of hwy 1X, pavement quality is good to great.  The pavement on hwy 1X is the sh*ts west of Ghost Lake.  Do your best to stay in the left portion of the lane and you'll be fine.  I ride pretty aggressively through there (love the twisties) and I noticed a couple of dips on the outer portions of the lanes that would swallow a motorcycle tire easily.  There are also very limited passing opportunities once you get into the twists, so get out in front of slow movers early if possible.

There is a gate on hwy 40 that closes a section of the highway (Highwood Pass) for the winter.  I believe it re-opens in the latter half of June.

There is a gas station about half way round the loop on hwy 40.  It carries premium fuel and is on the north side of the highway.

I get about 220km's/tank with my Hammer.  Since I'm coming from Red Deer, I refill in Cochrane, top up on hwy 40, top up in Black Diamond, and then head home.

I usually lunch at "Marv's" in Black Diamond.  It's an old fashioned burger/ice cream joint that is usually less crowded than the hotel up the street (the usual stop for most bikers).  Plus Marv's serves real ice cream sundaes!

I typically do this route from west to east - I find there's less traffic going this direction.

Oh man, I miss summer!  :)

The Buell has 16.7 Litres and with the luggage I can carry more if needed although I'd rather not be toting gasoline around if I don't have to. I asked about pavement because most of my travels in the area have been Jeep club activities off road so I'm not clear where pavement begins and ends. I've seen spectacular photos down that way from riders but am never clear where they were taken or what's paved.

Yup, That whole region and anything connecting to #22 (the Cowboy Trail) is breathtaking. I love it right down to the Crows Nest Pass. Great places down there without the parks fees ($9.80/day now per person) I know of a couple affordable places in the pass that even have barbecues out for guests. The whole area is gem not yet destroyed by million dollar condos.
