Ticket-Free Downtown Motorcycle Parking Map (Calgary)
« on: April 10, 2009, 08:43:58 AM »
Okay, so here's the plan. If anyone knows of any motorcycle parking spots downtown that don't get you ticketed, post them in this thread and I'll update the map as the new info comes in. If you do get ticketed at any of the spots mentioned below, please let me know so I can update the map.

1. Eau Claire Market - 0 Tickets but I think the free parking has ended due to newly erected signs that indicate this

2. The Old Spaghetti Factory (NE Corner of 3rd Ave and 3rd St SW) - 0 Tickets but I think the free parking has ended due to newly erected signs that indicate this

3. Impark Lot (SE Corner of Centre St Lot between 4th and 5th Ave SW) - 0 Tickets

Oh yeah, I'm not responsible if you park at one of these spots and get a ticket.

The last couple years I used to park on either the 4th or 5th Ave side of the (Impark?) lot on the East side of Centre St.  Just make sure you're on the gravel area and not taking up space that a car could use.

Never got a ticket! :)

Regarding the Impark lot on Center and 5th. I was parked in the SW corner on the gravel and received a ticket today.... not impressed.... especially since all the bike in the SE corner of the lot did not have tickets on them....

I feel your pain!  I hate thinking I've found a good spot that's free then getting back to the bike and seeing a ticket.

Here's a closer look at the spot in question.  So were there any other bikes besides yours in the SW corner that got tickets?

Interesting how they didn't ticket anyone from the SE corner though.

Anyone know a bylaw officer that could provide us with the low-down on where to park downtown without getting a ticket?

Yesterday the Spaghetti Factory mgmt left a note on all the bikes saying that the City is going to put up no parking signs there and that by next week they will be handing out tickets.  It's the end of free parking DT, I've received 2 tickets in the past 10 days at places that had be fine over the past 4 years.

Wow, talk about taking a step backwards!  The Spaghetti Factory management could have offered some kind of Biker happy hour discount to capitalize on the after-work opportunity that all the riders provide them by parking there.  I'll definitely be boycotting The Spag from now on if that's the case.  I encourage everyone here to do the same.

Thanks for the heads up Piago and great first post!  Would you mind sharing with us where you got those 2 other tickets?

Here's an interesting email I received today from a fellow rider:

Quote
I park on the corner of centre and 2ave sw, and just today June 3/09 they put up no parking signs, so all the bikes that are there tomorrow will probably be ticketed or worse towed. Also, they put up a warning notice at the old spaghetti factory today that says they are going to mark that area no parking and ticket any motorcycle parked there soon as well.

Thanks for the heads up Dan!

I've sent an open letter to the Alderman of Ward 8 voicing our concern over the lack of free/low-cost downtown parking for motorcycles/scooters, it can be found here: http://www.albertamoto.com/index.php?topic=54.0

I've been seeing 2 or 3 dozen bikes parked next to the North-facing wall of the old Office Depot building on 4th Ave between 4th and 5th Street SW.  Can anyone confirm this spot as being ticket-free?

Noticed today that the City has taken down the Pay for Parking sign in front of the Spaghetti Factory. Free parking is on again.

OK, so is there any free parking areas near 605-5th Avenue?  I thought I had found a good spot on 6th Street till I checked the mail and I had 3 wonderful pics of the back end of my bike.  Not happy.

I started out on a scooter because everyone was parking with the bikes at the Suncor tower on 1st between 5/6th SW.  That lasted a week and a half at most, then they told us all to move or get get towed.

After that, I've been paying the 10/day.  They want "green" and "economic" but they don't make it worth anyone's time, and it's a hard fight to be that way.  I'm currently in the middle of switching to a bike simply because I feel "if i'm going to have to pay, i might as well pay for a ride worthwhile".

But from every conversation I've had with everyone who rides, there is no more free parking anywhere.  Everything got clamped down on.  Is there something going on behind the scenes?  As far as I'm concerned, it's still better than driving to the bus stop in my jeep and paying for transit, and "oh look, I JUST missed my bus by 10 seconds....again"
