Reserve partition stuck on
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:01:04 PM »
Ok, this might sound ridiculous but it's the only thing thats making sense right now. For some reason it seems like my bike is somehow only drawing fuel from the reserve partition of the tank and only letting me get about 140km range.

Any idea on where to start with this? The bike is a 94 Yamaha YZF 750cc. It's had this issue since I bought the bike, but have only recently started riding it to find the max range of what I get to use.

So from what I gather, the bike should be getting between 40 and 45 mpg and with a 5-gallon tank, that's about 200 - 225 miles (322 - 362 kilometers) per tank.

I was under the impression that the reserve tube pulls from the same partition, just lower.  Is that not the case with this bike or bike's in general?

We first need to identify how much gas you're going through for the 140 kilometer range that you mention below.  Can you look in the tank and clearly see that there's gas left?

I think I end up getting to use about 9 liters, tank is capable of 19L and a 3.5L reserve. The fact that I can look in and still see half a tank of gas is why it took me a day of thinking to figure it out. So with that being said i think the reserve does sit lower in the tank, and fills off the main somewhere around the middle. As for my actual mpg, the carbs definitely need a tune (anyone wanna offer?) so I'm still not making my best mpg due to that and since the aerodynamics are right down the drain from removing the fairing

Other points to consider:
 - is your choke linkage properly fitted (choke may be still at 10-20%),
 - is your rear tire undersized or oversized. this may contribute to quicker accelleration with higher rpm's eating up more fuel, or low accelaration with less km reading on odometer,
- partially plugged fuel filtre,
- altered\malfunctioning internal parts of fuel pet cock\fuel line assembly,

No, it's definitely the reserve partition stuck on. I have ran this out of gas and looked into the tank and it still had half a tank in there, filled it back up and it started

I don't know without looking at the actual gas tank schematic but is possible that one of the lines is clogged?
