smart idea
« on: October 21, 2008, 01:52:34 PM »
**I am waiting for reponse from the Edmonton EMS Public Safety & Edmonton Education Center to see if this is happening here in Edmonton*** This letter was passed on to me but I'm not sure where it originated from??

Sounds like a great idea.

I C E- IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.

ICE - 'In Case of Emergency'
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign
The concept of 'ICE' is c atching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell(mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing   an ICE number in our   Mobile phones today!

Let me know what you guys think.

As distasteful as the thought of ever having to use this sounds, it's a pretty good idea.  It applies even more so for us due to the nature of riding and its added risks.  This is definitely something we should promote on here.  Thanks for bringing it up Bonnie!

I have just heard back from the EMS Safety & Education people.  The lady I spoke to is a Paramedic and Instructor.  She herself has ICE information on her cell phone.  Unfortunatly, it is not standard practice for them to automatically check your cell phone for this information.  BUT, after our conversation, she said that she was going to talk to the "people in power" about starting this program and including it in their instruction.  Her thoughts were the same as ours.  Hopefully, you never have to use it but what a great tool to use if you need it.

Not only is it a brilliant idea, but it should be incorporated with EMS training across the country, if not across the continent.
Life sucks: Put on a helmet and get used to it.

The disadvantage of this is when someone does find a cell phone, there is usually a password required to proceed - this would pose a problem. The only direct # accessible is 911.

I have " Emerg Con-Theresa(wife)" on my cell phone along with a few others. But, the cell phone is in my tank bag. Before cell phones where the norm ( read old brick style here ) I would get a blank biz card, then wrote down all the emerg contacts. Laminated it and tape it to my DL lic, which I still do.

Good idea - this typed list on back of license, or even in wallet and\or in bike pouch.

This is a great idea. I agree it's important to have "ICE" info somewhere. Due to sensitive info accessible through phones for some people, the licence idea is a good one. My phone is password protected, but my wallet isn't. Even having EMS and other Emergency Responders acknowledging the ICE acronym is a step forward. I work in the law enforcement field and that's new to me.
two wheels and an engine ... yep, it's a motorcycle

I have been doing that since ... 1985 or so. Way before cell phones even became a thought. My contacts list is always taped to my drivers Lic - be it in town daily rides or on a road trip.
