Strange lack of power
« on: June 05, 2010, 01:09:05 AM »
Well, never had a motor of any kind act like this for me before so here we go.

First things first, it's a 1994 Yamaha YZF 750cc that I've done a naked bike conversion to.

Since getting it to fire up after winter it's ran perfectly till one day I rode it in the rain just around the nieghbourhood in a very light rain. Went and topped off the tank and started to ride home and about half way it starts to stumble, miss and stalled a few times. Decided to toss in another bottle of gas line antifreeze just in case water got in and let it sit for a few days because it rained for a week solid. Tried to ride it again when the weather cleared up and it still had a intermitent lack of power/miss/idk. Pulled off the air box and ran open carbs for a day or 2 and it cleared right up. Put the air box back on and it stays good. Today take it to work and half way there it starts acting up again, limped it to work then limped it home and thankfully it cleared up on the highway and went smooth. Get off the highway and starts strong again.

Gonna park it till I can figure this out, any help will be greatly appreciated. If your in the Edmonton area and willing to come take a look to help me figure it out I live just north of Edmonton on hwy2 called Morinville, just let me know and I'll pm ya my cell #

What was it if you don't mind me asking?  I just think the information could come in handy if someone else ever experiences the same issue.

Well I pulled the pump out and the fuel filter was just a ragged torn piece of junk, so I rigged up an inline filter to fit because I didn't wanna buy a 750$ pump just for the filter. Then cleaned out the tank a bit and tossed the tank and some gas back in, started it up and still had the same issue...so I decided to just touch the headers and see if I was even on all 4 cylinders and it turned out I wasn't. Kinda explains why every now and then I'd get a back fire out the tailpipe. So my 2 outer cylinders wern't getting spark so I messed around with the coils for a few mins, shocking myself in a few places and got it to give me spark again. Now it's running fine again.

However, I laid it down turning into a gravel driveway this afternoon. Only thing that really makes me mad about that is that it bent my brand new headlight bracket.... so off the the local fab shop tomorrow to see what they can quickly build me as I'm planning on going to cold lake on Saturday morning with a couple buddies and I'd really like to not have to cancel. Other then that, I got a few bruises and jumped right back up after it happened and shut the bike off and picked it up right away. Ended up spilling some oil and a little bit got into the vacume line to the air box off the crank case while it was still running so when I started it back up I had about 2 mins of blue smoke then rode home and topped it off before riding down to wash it all off. Which since washing it, it doesn't wanna run again...... so back to square one and hoping that letting it sit in the garage over night will dry it out and it'll go again.... *fingers crossed*
