Insurance so I can learn.
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:46:58 PM »
Hey AlbertaMoto!

I'm an 18 year old Edmontonian and have a motorcycle I have fully paid off over the last year... However, I have a learners license - the roads are clearing up and i would really like to get some riding experience. Class 7 permits you to ride a motorcycle as a learner (someone with a motorcycle license must be near you when riding) but I know you can not insure or register a motorcycle with just a Class 7 so how am i expected to learn?

I know folks that I could ride with to learn, however I dont think they would go as far as to insure a motorcycle for me. I've been told by some older folks that (back in the day) they could insure and register a motorcycle with their Class 5 so that they could learn before going for their full license.

Does anyone know if this still holds true today? Because then I could just have a parent throw some insurance on it for me so that I may learn how to ride.

If not, how am I expected to have a registered and insured motorcycle for my road test when the time comes... ?

This is what you need to do:

1. Go to the registry and take the knowledge test. Study this handbook before you do. I assume you've already done this though.

2. You have to get your motorcycle insured. According the registry that I just called, you should be able to get insurance if you've successfully completed the knowledge test.

3. Once you've got your proof of insurance, you can bring that along with your license/learner's permit and get your bike registered.

You should be all set then but can only ride with someone else who has a full class 6 (motorcycle) license.

Another option is to do the weekend riding course to get your license. I have a list set up here. They provide you with motorcycle, helmet, and insurance for the bike. All you need is to have successfully passed your knowledge test.

Let me know what step above is causing you problems if this doesn't work.

Thank you Ryan these are the exact answers i was looking for! I'll stop in at the registry tomorrow and see what's the deal with this knowledge test, and phone around as far as insurance goes.

I've been told as of 2009 the Alberta government no longer allows what it calls "parking lot licenses" from these types of courses. I planned to get my license this way when i first purchased my bike last summer, and recently had my heart broken by this news.

I will be taking the safety course regardless. :)

Thanks alot for the info, i'll let you know how it turns out!

No problem. Keep us in the loop and let us know if you come across any problems. We're always here to lend out a helping hand. I'll have to look up this new "parking lot licenses" deal, that's new news to me.

Anyhow, we look forward to you becoming a new rider. Stay safe and keep in touch.

I'm still a little confused.

I have my class 5 which is equal to the motorcycle class 7, correct?

I know that a bike can only be registered with proof of insurance (and written test?), but...which insurance company will insure a rider with just a class 7?

Go to an insurance broker...they should have an answer for you.  I know I got quotes for insurance with a class 5, and quotes for a class 5-6...the amount was quite different...I go through an insurance broker and they shopped around for me...

I took the riding course that allowed you to use their bikes (and insurance) to take the road test...within a week I was a fully licensed rider with the cheap insurance 8)...just depends on whether or not you can get into the courses...I had to book two months in advance...and play the waiting game...my new toy mocking me in my backyard until I finished jumping through the hoops. :P

madjack30 has it right.

I have my class 5 only.

I went to a broker (brokerlink.ca) and they hooked me up right away with a insurance co. and insurance.
I'm paying $266/yr (liability only) on a 2009 Honda Rebel.

The bike is now insured, plated, and parked lol (it's been raining a lot).

Thanks for all the helpful advice on the forums!
