Just short of the Iron But.
« on: June 25, 2010, 02:39:35 PM »
Well for the second time in 2 years I'll be riding from Red Deer, AB to Alexandria British Columbia.

Google lists it as 941km....Just short of the 1000km for the ironbuts lowest km ride.

I'll be heading out on the 1st(ug hopefully i beat most the traffic and am done before hte drinking starts) and returing the 5th.

Weather looks good so thats nice.

Will be a bit rough as I have nto done any real rides yet this year so expect to be a bit sore :( Will be solo so that is less than ideal but hope to find someone along the rode to ride with.

Any others planning big rides?
:)

Hoping to make a trip from Sylvan Lake to Fairmont Hot Springs this summer...parents own a condo there...it would be a good excuse to take a ride through the mountains...make for some nice pics... ::)

Speaking of pics, I hope you took some along your "Iron Butt" ride...post 'em and show off...

Later.

How did the trip go?! Lets see some pictures!

I want to do a long distance so bad, but Im not completely comfortable on the highway, not sure if its my helmet, or just my technique, but my head whips around when I try to shoulder check

I really hated riding over 80 kph when I first started...was very un-nerving, but someone suggested I try using earplugs  :o...I thought, what the heck...now I love the hiway, and never ride without ear plugs...I think the wind noise is so distracting, it makes the hiway seem busier than it needs to be... 8)

I don't know, but it worked for me...now all I want to do is hit the road (not literally  ;D)

It doesn't kill the noise completely, but it dulls it...makes it tolerable, and is much better than ear buds, which I didn't find helped at all...

I'll give that a try as soon as we have nicer weather, I'll grab a few pairs from work today (:

The instructors at the course recommended ear plugs aswell actually

I have been on the highway since starting..Being that I live north of stony plain and work on 50st and the sherwood park freeway!! lol

I ALWAYS wear earplugs!!  There is no way I would ride without them....Only exception is if I am in Edmonton, and just running errands or going from work to a friends or something...

Ride out went great.
On the way back hit rain and decided to go through Edmonton and avoid the long lines of RV's.

Found out my smoked visors is not very good in the rain so i'll be looking for my clear one.

As for head whipping around I had that problem when i first started and found the problem was a poorly fitting helmet. A helmet should be pressed tight to your cheeks and make you look like a chipmunk. THe problem went away with a new helmet... to test this take note of the whip motion and see if it's the helmet rotating on your head slightly.
Also ear plugs are really nice and if doing a great deal of highway a fully recommend them.

Sorry no pictures as the goal of the ride was to get from A-B asap(wanted to make it for dinner as it was a birthday party) and on the way back was rainy and wanted to get back before my kids bed time to see him. Not the best way to ride but the ride was just a bonus as i had to make the trip anyways. Think I actually qualify for the Iron but with the new route :).

Did find some interesting people to ride with, love that about bikes. Just ride till your find one and ride with them, feel safer and it's more fun. Also good to stop for lunch and talk.  IS amazing how many distance riders are out there. One guy a I met does an 8h ride every weekend, wish i could in so many ways.

Glad your ride went well, even if the weather didn't totally co-operate...what?  :o No pics...bummer...that ride would have provided a few good view points.  8)

Oh well, maybe next time...
