Question about Alberta license plate
« on: August 02, 2009, 09:44:45 PM »
Hello riders,
I got myself a bike last spring when i was living in Alberta.
I do have all the albertan stuff (Plate, license, insurances) registered in Alberta but i moved back to Montréal lately.
I would like to keep the bike plated in Alberta because they are trying to discourage bike gang over here in quebec so a plate for a 1000cc will cost 1300$/year next summer (It's currently 1030$).
On top of that you have to insure the bike, buy a set of tire and pay for your drivers license which is 10x more expensive than it is in Alberta. I know it's retarded we are living in a socialist province like bc but it's suppose to go back to normal in 2012 as they are trying to catch up for the increasing number of accidents ( There is twice a much riders than there was in 1980 ) and believe me you are not an exception when u own a bike in Québec, everybody's got one.

My question is : Is is possible to fill up a form and get a friend of mine to go to the registries office and get the plate sticker for me ? Than he could send it to me by mail and it would save me a trip to Alberta, lol! We have that kind of form here with our own registries it's called a "procuration form". Does anyone knows if it's possible to do that? It's all privatised in Alberta so i have a doubt about that...

Thanks folks

Good question, but complicated.
Your friend could renew your plates as long as they had the renewal form and insurance. I could see a few problems though. In Alberta you have 90 days to register and insure your vehicles, so I would think Quebec would be similar. I wouldn't risk the ticket for that. Your insurance company might not allow you to have  a Quebec drivers licence and an Alberta insured and registered bike ether.
Good luck

uhmm yeah thanks for your answer.

In fact i would keep my alberta operators licence too.

All you need basically is an adress in Alberta.. that's all.

If i get pulled over around here all i have to say is that i'm a seasonal rig worker.. and  i'm here on vacation... as long as i have my adress in Alberta.

so if my friend has my renewal form and a proof of insurance he could go to the registries and do it for me? just like that without any extra form ?  that sounds pretty sweet.

Thanks
