New Riders Insurance
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:26:09 PM »
I have purchased a motorcycle to learn on (Suzuki Dr650se) but am now caught in a bit of a catch 22. . . My insurance company wont insure a driver that doesn't have a class 6, and without insurance I can't practice for my class 6 or even take the road test. I have people to ride with but their bikes are too tall for me to even use in a parking lot let alone on the road (BMW F650GS Dakar). I've done drivers training but would feel better with more practice before attempting the dreaded road test. Anyone have an idea what I can do?

One thing worth asking your insurance company is whether or not they will insure your bike after you've passed the initial written test.  If so, you'll only be able to ride with someone else who has a class 6.  Let us know if that'll work with them.  If it doesn't well figure something else out.

Thanks for the welcome!!!  ;D
When I went into talk to the insurance agent I had the certificate from my training course, the written exam sheet and my test permit (which is for the middle of may) but with all that I was still denied, even with my clean drivers abstract. It all just seems very strange to me, that you're almost expected to take the test with no practice, on someone else's bike before you can get one of your own to learn with.

Hey AngelAshes,

I need the following information from you...

1.  Your birthday
2.  Your bike model's year
3.  The month/year you took the training course
4.  Your postal code

If you don't feel comfortable replying to these questions on the forum, shoot me a private message.  I need to know your age before we get the ball rolling because most insurance companies seem to leave out people under 25.

At this point, it seems like only a few insurance companies will insure people in your position.  With more information, I can point you in the right direction.

Good news!!!!!! So, this morning I've been calling through the insurance company list that I found on another thread here and I found a company willing to help. $1500 for the initial insurance but that's only going to act as a deposit. Once I get my license they are going to drop it to the normal rate ($550) provided I get my license in a few weeks. According to the man I spoke with, the main concern is that it is a brand new bike (2010) and my being 28(and a girl) actually helped my cause. Though, as I found out afterward, the insurance broker and my Dad are old drinking buddies. . .that didn't hurt either ;) . Thanks so much for all your help!!! This site is an amazing wealth of information!!

Right on!  Glad it worked out for you.  Would you mind sharing what insurance company it was that you went through?  It might help someone else in the future who finds themselves in a similar situation.

Well, congrats on passing the course, the new bike purchase, and your obtaining proper insurance coverage. It does all bike riders good to hear\read about someone who is conscientious enough to follow through with good riding ethics.
Hope you have many km's and hours of enjoyment behind the handle bars, ride with pride.

Wow, this is good news, I'm glad it worked out for you!

I'm taking my road test a couple of hours after I've completed a 2 day training course, however, if I don't happen to pass, I'll be looking to go this route so I can practise on my bike before attempting the road test again.

Thanks for posting your story and good luck with your practise and road test.

Right on AngelAshes!!

I had no idea an option like that was available! I plan to take my test right after i havecompleted my course. I bought my bike already and its sitting at the dealership for now.  :-\
I will see how much practise i will need after the course but if all else fails i was planning on just throw the bike on a pick up truck and take it home that way. Its good to know there are other options out there.

Thanks for sharing and I'm glad it all worked out for ya!

Just an FYI for everyone.
I was in touch with AMA regarding insurance for my 07' Ninja 650R. AMA doesn't insure my bike specifically (because this type of a bike is more likely to be used for street racing appearantly) but they use NORDIC as a third party. I was quoted $397 including having my course certification but NOT my class 6.

ROAR LoL AMA is the first place where I started my search and was quoted $2000 but I know that feeling of a bike just sitting in a dealership!! My DR650 has been calling to me but with this weather I don't know when I will be able to bring it home. The pick up truck is starting to look like a very viable option!
