My suggestion, is to take a motorcycle course....If you haven't already!  Invaluable!  And we have a link here that lists courses thru alberta...
Not sure where you are located but generally at this time of year, some of them start to reduce their prices.....
My two cents

The road test is the minimum required.

A real course on how to ride will be much more valuable, it will keep you safe and give you much needed skills.

Every rider should be forced to take one imo...do it, you won't regret it.

I second the original poster's question.

I don't drive, and spent most of my life as either a commuter or pedestrian... road skills don't come as instinctively as a car-driver or passenger for me. They offer road-training for class 5, but not for motorcycles. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to prepare for the road test, as the handbook can only go so far.

Learning the rules of the road is a big part of it.  All of the same rules apply to riding as they do for driving...I think most of us assume that you are a driver already and getting a bike license as secondary transport.  For rules of the road training, I would almost recommend going for driver draining at AMA, or something like that...most of the beginner rider training is based on riding skills, not learning the road rules.  The testers watch to make sure you are using your signals, stopping at the line before making the turn, slowing in school/play ground zones, obeying the speed limit and other basic rules of the road...

Extra training is never a bad thing...they will re-enforce defensive driving...

Good Luck!!

Congrats buddy...now get some insurance and hit the streets...not literally of course   :o...I would head over to a parking lot and practice my emergency braking...that does come in handy...I would also practice riding slow...straight at first, then practice turning...as slow as you can go...if you can be steady riding slow, fast is easy...

Congratulations again!!   ;D

The best thing to do is to get out there and ride, ride, ride!

Here are a few tips from a driver examiner:
1. Maintain proper position on the road. Learn to define which tire track to stay in while travelling in any lane. "Left of centre" does not mean "left of the median".
2. Make a "statement" with your bike - not many drivers out there realize that you ARE A VEHICLE and you do deserve your own lane.
3. PRACTICE HILL START! It is a skilled maneuver for this class of licence. I always tell my clients: "One thing you are not being evaluated on is YOUR TIME!" You will be surprised what this manoeuvre does to even experienced riders as everyone for some reason starts to panic (just like parallel park for class 5)

I hope this helps. I am at risk of being bombarded by some strange messages again, but I will post more, - I am glad that bad circumstances led me to discover this great forum.

Good Luck on your Test!

I see ryan deleted your other post under your previous name. Your 3 helpfull hints geared to motorcycle riders is.. well... lame.

You must be a driver instructor for cagers. Get a bike, get a license, ride a few years and then post your knowledge.
