Hi there.
I can't really answer your question because i am in the same situation but i want to ask you something. I got an Alberta operator's licence but i moved to another province a couple weeks ago.
The thing is.. i did order a motorcycle last fall and i was on a waiting list and i have to go back to Alberta and pick it up next week. I also want to spend a few days in Alberta to do my written test, road test and get the plates and insurances in Alberta and keep it registered over there because it is a hell of a pain in the ass to get a bike licence where i come from.. so i will get it in Alberta and swap it next year.. way way easier.

Here's what i wanna know :

1- Do you need a learner to get the bike insured.
2- How long did u wait to pass your road test?
3- When u get the bike registered, do you need your learner and a proof of insurance ?
4- When u register do they give you a plate right away or they mail it.

It's about it..... i called the registries in Edmonton and they told me i could do the road test by may 7th and than i called in a small town and they said just show up today.. pay for it and do it the next monday.

I'll be waiting for your feedback.. and hopefully u will tell me how's the road test like.
Cause i'm very tight on schedule.. i gotta fly to Edmonton, do all this.. and ride the bike back.

All'ight.. take it easy  ???

Here's what I got for you:

#1 - Yes, you need a learner's license to get the bike insured (according the registry I called a few weeks back with this post http://www.albertamoto.com/index.php?topic=96.0)
#2 - I'm not quite sure what your asking.  How long did I wait after I got my learner's to do my road test?  I did the Calgary Safety Council course over the weekend and then had my "parking lot" test at the end of the weekend.  If you've never been on a bike, you'll probably want a few days of riding with someone with a class 6 and besides, you're not permitted to ride without another rider who has their class 6 after you get your learner's and before you pass your road test.
#3 - Yes (again according to the registry I called a few weeks back)
#4 - They give you a plate right away.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Cool thanks man!
I meant.. how long from the day you booked your road test to the day u did it, but it looks like u did some sort of training course that gives u the licence at the end, right ?
it's interesting.. when did u do that, last weekend??

I wouldn't mind doing this.. but my bike is in Edmonton.. so i would have to find a training school in edmonton and to be really really lucky to find some room for the next weekend.

How much was this test, about 500$ ?
I did ride dirtbikes before but it's been over a year so it woudn't hurt myself.. but however i don't think it is a really big deal this test.. just need an hour or two in a parking lot or in a residential area to get familiar with the bike and it would do her.

Can is ask you what type of bike u got and how much you pay for plate and insurances ?

Thanks for your Help

No problem!

I don't remember exactly how long it was.  For me I essential booked the Calgary Safety Council course about 2 weeks before it started.  I then went in and wrote my learner's.  I didn't ride at all between the time I wrote the learner's and the time I showed up for the safety course.  We spent an evening on Wednesday (with the Calgary Safety Council) going over theoretical stuff then Friday evening, all of Saturday, and most of Sunday training on bikes in some industrial parking lot where they set up all the cones.  The Safety Council gave us a pass or fail mark (which had nothing to do with obtaining class 6 but they highly recommended that we not do the class 6 test if we had failed).  The class 6 testers showed up in the afternoon on Sunday and those of us who passed did the test for an additional $35 I think.

I did this sometime in October, 2005 I believe.

Check the new post for Edmonton Riding Schools that I posted.  Give them all calls and find out about their availability and whether they can accommodate you under your unique circumstances.  They'll be more helpful then me in this regard.

Yeah, the tests are about $500.  I honestly think, though, that you'd need a lot more than an hour or two in a parking lot to pass the road test and would highly recommend taking a safety course.  I could be wrong though.

After finishing my course, I bought a KLR650.  The registration (plates) cost me about $35 for 6 months and insurance for that bike cost about $50/month.  The insurance for my sportbike is about $120/month now though.  It really depends on the bike, your age, and how long you've had a class 6.

If anyone has taken the road test this year and knows what specific skills are tested that would be a great help. I have a test booked this Sunday .......if the snow holds off.

I love Alberta.

I need some help. My oldest son and I are taking the motorcycle course at Lethbridge College this weekend. We want to do our road test but don't have a bike yet. I called the registries and they are no help. They suggest borrowing a bike but we don't know anyone with a bike here. I called about renting one but you can't  rent without a license. Any suggestions? ??? ???

My first suggestion would be to call whoever runs the motorcycle course at the college and ask them if they have any special cases where they might be able to provide their course bikes for the road test.  It would seem that if you spend a weekend doing a motorcycle course with an organization and using their beat up motorcycles, that they'd be kind enough to let you use them for a road test immediately following the course (assuming you receive a passing mark from the course instructors).

The only other option I can think of is to buy the cheapest motorcycle you can find and use it for the test.  I think you can buy a motorcycle, insure and register it even without a class 6, although you'd need proof that you have your learner's and then ride it with someone who has a class 6.  This question though, would probably be better addressed to someone who works at a registry.  So if you're considering this option, call a registry and get more details to make sure this is, in fact, possible.  Once you're done the test, you can then sell the bike again.

Option 2 would be more of a pain in the rear so I would suggest following up with option 1.

Edit:  I just called Sheila from the Lethbridge College motorcycle training program at 403-317-3533 and she informed me that their bikes are not "road-ready" so they can't take them off the lot so it looks like your options at this point are to:

1) Find someone, anyone willing to lend you their bikes for the course or...
2) Buy a cheap used bike like I mentioned above and sell it (or keep it) once you've done the test or...
3) Complete your motorcycle training through some other organization/company that will supply you their bikes for the road test upon completion of their course

I'd lend you guys my bike but I live in Calgary and it's a 1000cc sportbike, which definitely isn't appropriate for a testing/new rider bike.

Calgary Safety Council is a highly recomended outfit  and they loan you a bike for free after there course for the road test.

You can do there course over a weekend and book your road test for Sunday after the course if you are from out of town this ma be easiest.

Hey,

I'm going for my road test tomorrow (July 24th) and I will give everyone an update on what is required and if there is anything that you should keep your heads up about.

Fingers crossed, I took the Too Cool Motorcycle School course a little while ago, so hopefully I'm all good to go!

Ok, so good news! Just aced my Test!

The main things that they are looking for (in Cochrane atleast) is
1. the ability to keep your lane position
2. moving to the proper lane position for a right hand turn (right hand side of the lane)
3. Controlling of your speed
4. Playground zones
5. ability to merge into traffic

The hill start is pretty easy, you just cant roll back or stall the bike (just use the rear brake, give it more power then necessary and then let the bike pull you up the hill and release rear brake)

Other then that it was pretty simple. Just know the rules of the road, watch your speed and lane position and you will do fine.

The only weird thing is having the 1 way radio. Its a earpiece you put in, the examiner follows behind in a car and tells you which direction to turn. They give you lots of time to prepare for the corners too. If you cant hear them you tap on your helmet with your left hand.

Well wish all you others the best! I am sooo pumped to spend the rest of the summer riding!

Congrats for passing and welcome to the club!  I think the info you've shared will help a lot of people prepare for their road tests.  See you out there and don't forget to wave!
